Research Areas:

Hajo Greif’s research interests cover both the philosophy and the social studies of science. His current work focuses on
  1. models of the environment in Artificial Intelligence research and related fields,
  2. naturalistic theories in the philosophy of mind and language, from Teleosemantics to the Extended Mind,
  3. ethical and policy issues in the information society.
Hajo Greif also has a background in the philosophy of biology, which serves to inform his current specialisations. All strands of his work converge in his current project (for "habilitation") on models of action and thought in Ambient Intelligence and Behaviour-Based Artificial Intelligence research.

Upcoming: ALWS Symposium 2012, "Ethics – Society – Politics", with Martin Weiß.

Short Biography:

Born and raised in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Hajo Greif received his doctorate in philosophy in 2004 from Technische Universität Darmstadt (TUD). He completed his undergraduate studies ("magister" degree) in philosophy, cultural anthropology and sociology at J.W. Goethe Universität, Frankfurt, and his doctoral studies at the Darmstadt-based post-graduate school "Technisierung und Gesellschaft" (Technology and Society).

Hajo Greif was a visiting fellow at the Science Studies Unit, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK in 2001. For the 2003/2004 academic year, he was a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Science, Technology and Society (IAS-STS), Graz, Austria, where he worked on a project on the history of the Darwinan theory of evolution.

After part-time lectureships at his former universities, he returned to Graz in 2005 to form the ICT research unit at the Inter-University Research Centre for Technology, Work and Culture (IFZ), together with Matthias Werner, Oana Mitrea and Gerd Schienstock.

In early 2009, Hajo Greif moved to the University of Klagenfurt to assume an assistant professorship at the Department of Science and Technology Studies, where he continues to work with his team.

In addition to his research and teaching, he translated Ruth Millikan's 2004 book "Varieties of Meaning", plus some of her essays, into German (for Suhrkamp).
